by Dayna Winters

When you get a tarot deck you will want to prepare the deck for use by sleeping with the deck for three to five days beneath your pillow. To ensure that positive energies surround the cards at all times, you will also need to protect the cards from negativity. You can make a protective tarot bag to store your cards in and there are additional measures you can take to ensure that your tarot cards always have great energies.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 - wooden box
  • 1 foot x 1 foot piece of black fabric
  • 1 or 2 quartz colored beads with large holes
  • 12 inch piece of string or gold or silver cord
  • Black thread
  • Consecrated sea salt
  • Fabric marker
  • Lavender tea bag
  • Measuring tape
  • Needle
  • Notepad
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Small plastic zip lock bag
  • Straight pins
  • Thimble
  1. Step 1

Visit the fabric store and get a 1 ft x 1 ft piece of fabric that is black; refrain from using velvet or velveteen fabric since it collects dust easily.

  2. Step 2

Measure your tarot card deck's width, length, and depth; note your measurements on a piece of paper.

  3. Step 3

Use the measurements collected and add two to three inches extra for each dimension. Use the ruler and fabric pencil to mark the fabric so that it has the same dimensions that you have noted.

  4. Step 4

Cut the 1 ft x 1 ft piece of fabric to your desired dimensions in a square. Fold the fabric in half with the inside of the fabric facing out; along the length and bottom width of the fabric, use straight pins to pin the two edges together.

  5. Step 5

Thread the needle with the black thread. Put the thimble on your thumb and hand stitch the side closed where you have placed the straight pins to close the bottom and the side of the bag. Keep your stitches close together for a secure tarot card bag. Knot off the thread when finished and cut off the excess thread. Remove the straight pins.

  6. Step 6

Keep the fabric inside out. Fold down the fabric along the lip of the bag opening about a half inch all the way around; use straight pins to secure the fold. Rethread the needle and sew the fold over; leave an opening at each end of the bag so that you have four openings in all big enough to slip your string through. Remove the straight pins.

  7. Step 7

Use 12 inch piece of string or gold/silver cord for your tarot card bag tie; slip the string through the openings you left in the folds along the opening edge of the bag. Slide one end in from left to right and repeat the process on the other side.

  8. Step 8

Bring the two string ends together and make a knot about two inches from the ends of the strings. Add quartz crystal beads to the end of each string to decorate them.

  9. Step 9

Consecrate your sea salt and place it directly in the bottom of the bag. Put the salt in a zip lock bag if you prefer to keep the salt from coming in direct contact with your cards. Consecrate the bag with your choice of consecration methods.

  10. Step 10

Add a lavender tea bag inside the bag so that your cards always smell wonderful every time you use them. Refresh the bag by changing it periodically to ensure a lovely smell.

  11. Step 11

When your tarot cards are not in use, store them in the black tarot bag at all times to ensure that negative energies are kept at bay. For added protection, store the bag in a wooden box.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use different types of tea with unique aromas to change the smell of the bag from time to time if you desire.
  • Hand wash the bag using a gentle detergent and flat dry it to keep it in good condition.
  • Make sure you periodically sleep with the deck under your pillow to recharge the cards with energy; you can keep the cards right in the bag to keep the cards safe as you do so.
  • Never place your cards in the protective tarot bag after washing the bag until it is absolutely dry; you run the risk of defacing your cards, and in warping the appearance of your cards too.
