Symbology and Function of the Magic Circle

What Casting a Magic Circle Means, What Casting a Magic Circle Does

In the pagan tradition, a magic circle (sacred circle, circle of magic, or even "circle of art") is the foundation for any pagan ritual or ritual magic. Casting a magic circle can be a deeply meditative experience (even
for the secular people out there). There are many theories about the functions of the sacred circle, and there are even more styles of rituals for casting the magic circle. All of that can be a large pill to swallow (although magic pills can be fun), so here I will explain the basic symbolic meanings and purposes for casting a magic circle.

The "corners" of a magic circle

Each cardinal point is symbolic in the circle of magic.

East is symbolic of the element of Air; intellect, erudition, and mental faculties; Tarot suit of Swords.

South is symbolic of the element of Fire; passion, energy, excitement, creativity, and aggression; Tarot suit of Wands.

West is symbolic of the element of Water; subconscious knowledge, emotion, birth, and fertility; Tarot suit of Cups.

North is symbolic of the element of Earth; physical strength, stability, material success, and work; Tarot suit of Disks.

The circle's caster (the witch or magician) places an item or magic tool that symbolizes each of these properties at the respective corners of the magic circle.

The magic circle's purpose

The circle represents macrocosm (the universe) within microcosm (the atomic). The circle creates a domain where the witch or magician's will is law. The functions of the magic circle are:

1. Casting a magic circle creates a space that is shifted away from mundane reality. This space is more in tune with subspace, extra-dimensional forces, or "ether" (the medium through which magic, thought, and otherworldly creatures travel).

The magic circle functions as a well in which universal energies can gather.

2. Casting the sacred circle is a deeply meditative experience, calming the witch or magician so that he or she can enter the necessary trance states.

3. Through the process of creating the sacred circle, the magician focuses his intent or will, awakening the networks of meaning within the magician's brain as he manifests the symbols.

4. The magic circle "banishes" or cleans the area of harmful or intrusive spirits and thought-forms.

5. Magic circles protect the caster from outside influences, particularly from demonic intrusion, creating a barrier of force.

So, whether you are interested in New Age philosophies, classical religious beliefs, whether you're an agnostic, or even a shadow member of the Illuminati, casting a magic circle can be a deeply rewarding and fulfilling experience. Magic circles are excellent to meditate within. Now that you're interested, I suggest doing further research to see what style fits you the best.
